Four Tips to Get Your Body Moving

May 15, 2018 - Rose Villa | Advice

With summer right around the corner, the sunshine peeking through and flowers in full bloom, there is no better time to feel motivated to get up, get outside, and get moving! If you’re having trouble shaking off the sluggishness of winter, however, try one of these four tips to boost morale and get your body moving.

Take a Fitness Test or Assessment

Sometimes the hardest part about getting into a daily fitness routine is knowing where to start. Instead of jumping in head first, it may be helpful to find out your strengths and weaknesses. By taking a fitness test or assessment, you will gain baseline data on where you excel and where you can improve. From there, you can determine what exercises or fitness classes not only work for you and fit into your schedule, but also help you improve upon those parts of the fitness test you didn’t do as well on.

Hire a Personal Trainer

If you’ve tried to get active on your own and find you aren’t having success or being consistent with your routine, consider hiring a personal trainer. Sometimes adding a monetary investment and having a personal cheerleader is enough to push you to set goals and achieve them. Not to mention, it’s your personal trainer’s job to tailor a workout plan that meets your health and fitness goals, addresses any injuries, and pushes you to be consistent.

At Rose Villa, our wellness program is focused on the six dimensions of wellness: emotional, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, and vocational. Our programs and classes are developed around these dimensions and I work with residents individually to design a custom regimen for them. No matter what fitness level, there is something for everyone here.

Join a Fitness Class and Make It a Date

If you’ve been interested in trying a new fitness class like yoga or Tai Chi, but have made excuses not to sign up, invite a friend! Having a partner will not only ease the discomfort of trying something new, it will help to keep you accountable.

Also, don’t limit yourself to one type of class. Variety is the spice of life, so give yourself options and invite new friends each time. This is a great way to get to know your neighbors and activate different parts of your body. Riverpoint Wellness at Rose Villa offers a range of programs and activities that promote wellbeing, including dance, yoga, weight lifting, and more. Whether you’re a lifelong fitness enthusiast, a beginner or somewhere in between, there’s a class for everyone.

Create a Reward System

Something we can all agree upon is the wonderful feeling of being rewarded for our hard work. If you find that early morning walks or afternoon weight training is continuously being pushed off, try implementing a point system. Rank workouts from easy, moderate to difficult and attach a point amount to go with it. Then, set yourself up with attainable goals. As each goal is met, reward yourself with something you’ve been eyeing, such as a smoothie treat or new workout shoes. This will help you benchmark your progress, celebrate the small milestones, and keep you motivated to reach your next goal.

The opportunities to get up and go are everywhere. What’s key is finding what tools for motivation work best for you and applying them. While there is a right and wrong way to properly exercising your body, there is no right or wrong way in finding inspiration.
