The Foundation's Four Pillars
Through our Four Pillars, the Foundation provides critical financial assistance for housing and support of residents who outlive their resources. We offer educational programs, workshops, and services to enrich the lives of all Rose Villa residents, their family members and the community. The Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit that works in close collaboration with Rose Villa Inc. to assist with the financial needs and wellbeing of residents.
Resident Assistance
Core to the mission and fundraising work of the Foundation since 1963, this pillar provides financial assistance for housing and care to residents who have depleted their financial resources. Donations to this pillar provide a safety net that ensures that residents who have lived at Rose Villa for seven years will have resources necessary to continue to live at Rose Villa while maintaining their dignity and independence.
Education Enrichment
Knowing that we never stop learning, this pillar helps promote the financial, physical, mental, and social wellbeing of residents, family and the community through cutting-edge workshops and innovative speakers series.
Professional Services Support
This pillar provides support in the form of confidential one-on-one financial coaching and access to a vetted list of professional financial planners, fiduciaries, legal counselors, and tax service providers.
Unrestricted
Donations to this pillar allows the Board of Directors to determine how best to use your gift and leverage operational funds for specific improvements or programs that enhance the well-being of residents at Rose Villa.

Treasurer, Rose Villa CEO VByrd@rosevilla.org (503) 652-3279One of the most rewarding parts of being the Chief Executive Officer at Rose Villa is getting to work with the team of experienced, creative, and smart managers who really run our community. My part is to focus on the future, to ensure Rose Villa serves its residents in just exactly the ways that are most meaningful to them. Continually renewing, expanding and deepening to maintain pride, energy, and personal growth for every resident and staff person connected to us.
As we continually reimagine and enrich our campus, we seek to build strong links to the Greater Portland, OR, community at all levels and all generations, connecting with people and organizations that provide a natural fit with the attitude and lifestyle at Rose Villa.
I began my career as an economist, obtaining my MS in Economics from the London School of Economics. After working in Washington DC and Portland, Oregon for 10 years, I chose to change my career entirely for the opportunity to work in nonprofit senior living. I received my MA in Gerontology from Naropa University, Boulder, Colorado, and came to serve as Rose Villa’s CEO in 2007.
I am passionate about the opportunity to change the way we age—blowing up negative stereotypes of aging as weakness and frailty and recognizing older adults as tough, smart experienced people with a tremendous amount to offer.
Working with residents and staff in teams, coming up with ideas, getting to implement new ways to achieve our goals—it's the best thing I get to do. I appreciate a challenge. If it isn’t hard, it isn’t worth it.
Not only do I have the privilege of working with the best in the field, but I have the honor to call as my colleagues the amazing people who call Rose Villa home.
Little-known (or maybe well-known) facts about me
To say I love watersports is a severe understatement! Dragon boating, rowing, outrigger canoeing, kayaking, surfing, and water skiing all have a place in my life. I will take a race in any capacity; I completed my first Hood to Coast race in 2013! I love to travel; I love food and cooking, and am passionate about really great Bourbon.
